Bangladesh’s former PM Sheikh Hasina charged with crimes against humanity

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been formally charged with crimes against humanity in connection with the violent crackdown on mass protests in July 2024.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been formally charged with crimes against humanity in connection with the violent crackdown on mass protests in July 2024.

According to IRNA, the charges, brought by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), accuse Hasina of orchestrating the deadly suppression of demonstrations that took place across the country between July and August last year. The tribunal has labeled her as the primary instigator behind the killings.

Alongside Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Mamun have also been implicated in the case as co-accused.

On May 12, 2025, investigators submitted a report alleging that Hasina directly ordered the violent actions against protesters. According to ICT Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, the crackdown resulted in over 1,500 deaths, more than 25,000 injuries, and widespread reports of torture and other forms of inhumane treatment.

Hasina, who has taken refuge in India, has dismissed the charges against her as politically motivated. Despite the accusations, she remains in self-imposed exile, continuing to deny any wrongdoing.

The case has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations closely monitoring developments as Bangladesh navigates the legal and political fallout of the events of 2024.
